چکیده

We consider queueing systems where a finite number of customers arrive over time to a service system, consisting of either a single or multiple servers. The arrival of customers is driven by appointments, with a scheduled appointment time associated with each customer. However, customers are not necessarily punctual and may arrive either earlier or later than their scheduled appointment times. Customers may also not show up altogether. The arrival times of customers (relative to their scheduled appointments) and their service times are both stochastic. Customers are not homogeneous in their punctuality, show-up probabilities, and time between previous and subsequent appointments, which may vary from customer to customer. We develop an exact analytical approach to obtain various performance measures of interest and illustrate the usefulness of the approach by describing numerical results that examine the impact of not accounting for non-punctuality and no-shows. We also illustrate how our approach can be used to support individualized appointment scheduling, and show how such a scheduling scheme can significantly outperform schemes where all appointment times are equally spaced.

A Data-Driven Model of an Appointment-Generated Arrival Process at an Outpatient Clinic

In order to develop appropriate queueing models that can be applied to efficiently provide good service in a service system with arrivals by appointment, we carefully consider what stochastic arrival process models may be appropriate. We provide a guideline or template for creating stochastic arrival process models by carefully examining appointment and arrival data from an endocrinology clinic...

Scheduling Arrivals to Queues: A Single-Server Model with No-Shows

Q systems with scheduled arrivals, i.e., appointment systems, are typical for frontal service systems, e.g., health clinics. An aspect of customer behavior that influences the overall efficiency of such systems is the phenomenon of no-shows. The consequences of no-shows cannot be underestimated; e.g., British surveys reveal that in the United Kingdom alone more than 12 million general practitio...

Association between age and outpatient clinic arrival time: myth or reality?

BACKGROUND Non-attendance and late arrivals diminish patient flow in outpatient clinics. On the other hand, patient earliness may also be undesirable. Physicians often experience that older patients are more punctual than younger patients, and often they come excessively early. The aim of this study was to determine whether an association between age and outpatient clinic arrival time could be ...

An Asymptotic Analysis of Queues with Delayed Information and Time Varying Arrival Rates

Understanding how delayed information impacts queueing systems is an important area of research. However, much of the current literature neglects one important feature of many queueing systems, namely non-stationary arrivals. Non-stationary arrivals model the fact that customers tend to access services during certain times of the day and not at a constant rate. In this paper, we analyze two two...

Stochastic Decomposition in Discrete-time Queues with Generalized Vacations and Applications

For several specific queueing models with a vacation policy, the stationary system occupancy at the beginning of a random slot is distributed as the sum of two independent random variables. One of these variables is the stationary number of customers in an equivalent queueing system with no vacations. For models in continuous time with Poissonian arrivals, this result is well-known, and referre...
